Bus to Books
Our Bus to Books program is a summer enrichment program for English Language Learners (ELL) and financially disadvantaged children from specific elementary schools. It serves approximately 120 children each week during the summer.
In this program, children and other family members are bussed to the Glen Ellyn Public Library each week for a 1-hour visit, which includes special programming, participation in the Summer Reading incentive program, and the opportunity to check out and return library books. The Library works with a coordinator for each group to enroll children for Bus to Books, to contact the parents for the necessary permission, and to supervise the groups from door to door. The participants are all Glen Ellyn residents, or attend a Glen Ellyn School.
Bus to Books was initiated in 2000 as a partnership between the Glen Ellyn Public Library and an ELL teacher from Lincoln Elementary. It has expanded since then to include students from 3 additional Elementary schools.
The Bus to Books program is made possible, in part, by generous donations from the Glen Ellyn Infant Welfare Society, and the Friends of the Library.
