The Glen Ellyn Public Library
For Kids This section is good for kids from birth through 8th grade.

Teachers' Handbook

The Youth Services Department invites you to take advantage of the services we offer Glen Ellyn teachers. The Library has materials and services available for teachers of Districts 41, 89, 87, St. Petronille School, and St. James School. Our goal is to create a positive experience every time your students use the Library. Positive experiences today will build the skills they need to become life-long learners. We look forward to working with you.     — Youth Services Department

Library Cards

Although we can not give every Glen Ellyn teacher a library card, each school library has a record on which we can check materials out to your school. The school librarian is the main contact for the school record. Most schools send a list of names of approved users for this record, so your name may already be on the list. Most items circulate for four weeks. No overdue fines will be issued for materials checked out on these cards, but the user is responsible for lost or damaged items. If you prefer not to use the school card, remember that you can always use your personal library card, from most area suburbs, to check out Glen Ellyn materials on your own. For any items checked out on a personal card, fines will be issued for overdue materials and the user is responsible for any lost or damaged items.

Assignment Alerts

As committed as we are to meeting the needs of our users, there is a limit to the amount of material we can provide. Before the library staff is aware of an assignment, the first three or four students who get to the library can easily take all the books, even if we have fifteen books on the subject.

Assignment Alerts help remedy this situation. By alerting us to an assignment you’ve made, we can pull the appropriate materials and set up a reserve shelf for the students. By restricting these materials to in-library use, the materials will be available so all students can complete the assignment. If it is possible to send a copy of the assignment, this will assist library staff when putting aside materials and helping the students. When assigning research topics, remember that the broader the subject, the more success your students will have.

You may fill out our online form and submit it over the Internet. If you prefer, you may call Youth Services at 469-0879, or you may print out the form and fax it to 469-1086 or mail it to Youth Services, Glen Ellyn Public Library, 400 Duane Street, Glen Ellyn, IL, 60137.

Classroom Collections

Library staff will be happy to pull materials to be sent to your school for your students to use in your classroom. Orders for classroom collections can be placed over the phone or by online form. Please give one week’s notice for collections that we select. Delivery of these materials to District 41 schools is currently possible through the use of the District van.

If a collection is needed at the last moment, you are always welcome to select books yourself. In this instance, your name needs to be on the school card before you can check out any materials.

Library Visits

Glen Ellyn classes are welcome to visit our library as the schedule allows. Classes could visit for story times, to do research, or for a tour. To enable the Youth Services staff to plan a tour or program that meets your student’s needs, it is important to call and arrange your visit at least two weeks in advance. As an alternative, staff members are available to visit the schools as duties allow. Call Youth Services at 469-0879 to arrange a visit.
