1,000 Books Before Kindergarten

Toddler reading a book.

The Glen Ellyn Public Library is encouraging children to read 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten!Reading aloud to your child is one of the best things you can do to help prepare them for Kindergarten. It’s an activity known to develop essential pre-reading skills. Most importantly, reading aloud to your child can raise a lifelong reader!

The library knows that reading 1,000 books aloud sounds like hard work. But if you read one book a night, you will have read over 1,000 books in three years. If you read three books a day, you will complete the program in a year!

Everything read to your child counts. These books can be:

  • Read multiple times
  • From the library
  • Not from the library
  • Read by an older sibling/babysitter/grandparent
  • Read at preschool
  • Read at storytime
