Sketch of young woman with long braided hair.Have you ever suddenly discovered something about yourself, something you may have never expected yourself to take upon? This recently happened to me; more specifically, it happened to me this summer. As I lazed around the house, sitting around with not much to do, the long summer days finally started to itch. I was yearning to take upon a new, interesting hobby, but I had no idea where to begin. This partly being because I wanted to find myself doing something I enjoy, and partly also being that I wanted to make my free time worthwhile.

So, I did what almost every modern-age human does when in doubt: I used Google to my benefit. I did not know where I was going to go with it, but figured that the search ‘cool hobbies for teens’ would be worth a shot. Soon enough, my motivation died out. Crafting, creating DIYs, or painting did not seem to be the hobby I longed to dedicate my time to. Almost giving up, I thought a quick shower would ease my thoughts.

As I combed my hair after washing up, I realized that I wanted to do something different with it. It is usually held back simply, but with the endless amount of time I had, it would not hurt to try something new with it. As I stood in front of my bedroom mirror, I divided my hair in three and twisted and turned it until I ended up with a simple braid down my back. I was quite proud of what I had done, mainly being that I had never previously thought I would be able to do something like it before. Curious, I reverted to YouTube, and on it searched ‘hair braiding tutorials.’ It was amazing to come across so many different styles of braids and other ways to do my hair. And, through this one search online, I had finally found the treasure chest of my quest — I had found something that I could turn into a passion.

Fast forward a couple of months, to now. My motivation to create marvelous do’s in hair has ever-endured. I have mastered the intricate ‘fishtail’ and the loopy ‘French braid’ with much practice. This is quite surprising to me, when I think about it, as I have never found something I enjoyed as much as I do with braiding. And what fascinates me the most is that this passion of mine only ever grew to be a passion when I sought to learn more about it. What I have learned is that, when you are on a journey to find yourself, a passion, or anything else, you must keep searching. Motivation, quite simply, is a key ingredient to success. This summer I have accomplished something I think is quite mentionable — finding and living what I love. With every twist and fold of my hair, I know I will never turn back.
