Happy 4th of July!Posted: July 2, 2019

The 4th of July is almost here! What do you think of when you think about July 4th? My parents love to tell the story of how they promised me ice cream because the fireworks were rained out—but all the ice cream stores in the nearby tiny towns were closed. Which meant no ice cream and no fireworks.
Even still, the 4th of July is one of my favorite holidays. I love the parades with marching bands, trays of watermelon, the sparklers, and the booms of fireworks. I also really appreciate the way it can bring our Glen Ellyn community together to celebrate around Main Street and Lake Ellyn.
I’ve found a few patriotic books that are perfect to enjoy around the 4th of July.
Pie for Sharing: Tells the magic of a summer picnic, sparklers, and spending the day outside.
Blue Sky, White Stars: Kadir Nelson’s stunning illustrations showcase some of the more iconic images of the United States.
America: A Patriotic Primer: A great way to explore America’s history with younger kids.
Go, Go, America: My absolute favorite USA trivia book. Whether you’re going on a road trip or wishing you were, this one captures all 50 states.
Don’t forget to count the fireworks you hear…it’s an activity on your Game On! Summer Challenge board!
