1. Make new friends
Book club is not only a literary discussion but also a social event. It’s a great place to find like-minded bookworms in your community. Some people even make lifelong friendships through book club!
2. Learn something new
You never know what you might learn at book club. You could come away with an in-depth knowledge of a major social issue – or you might pick up your fellow book club member’s fabulous peanut butter cookie recipe. Either way, you know something you didn’t know before.
3. Hold yourself accountable
It’s easy to get distracted from your reading list with so many other things going on: work, family, Netflix, etc. When you join a book club, you’re motivated by a solid reading deadline. After all, you wouldn’t want to show up for book club without having made it to that plot twist!
4. Read something different
It’s easy to get stuck reading the same genres or authors over and over again. At book club you will be introduced to all sorts of books you wouldn’t normally pick up. And who knows, you might end up finding something new that you love!
5. Get involved in your community
Book discussions often segue into conversations about the local community and society in general. You may find yourself making unexpected connections with your fellow neighbors.
The GEPL book clubs, GEPL Book Discussion and Brown Bag Book Club, each meet once per month. Check out the book club schedule via the online calendar.
Already in a book club? You can reserve copies of books, request discussion guides, and get recommendations for titles with GEPL’s book club service. Email me at bmurphy followed by gepl.org to get started.
