Fantastic Firefighters

Kids are fascinated by firefighters and fire trucks. Let’s face it, adults are, too. Once, my neighbor’s house caught fire, and while everyone rushed outside to see what was happening, I was stunned and amazed to see the firefighters rushing inside to put out the fire. Of course, I knew intellectually that that is what they do, but seeing their bravery and sheer grit in person really makes one realize how lucky we all are to live among people who willingly risk their lives for the sake of others. Celebrate the upcoming Fire Prevention Week (October 6 through October 12) by sharing some books about firefighting with your kids. Not only will they learn about the cool vehicles, exciting rescues, and important safety concepts, but they will also learn about empathy and how to help others in need. Here are a few picture books that feature both male and female firefighters, and even fire bears!

Fire Engine No. 9 by Mike Austin

Firebears, the Rescue Team by Rhona Greene

Firefighter Ted by Andrea Beaty

Firefighters! Speeding! Spraying! Saving! by Patricia Hubbell

Firefighter Frank by Monica Wellington

Here’s a fun rhymes to share with your little ones. Extend the learning by dressing up and pretending to put out a pretend fire, or use some blocks to construct a city and have firefighters (mini figurines) come to the rescue!

I’m a Little Firefighter (to the tune of “I’m a Little Teapot”)

I’m a little firefighter, dressed all in red

Put my fire hat up on my head.

I can drive the fire truck, and fight fires too,

I will help make it safe for you.

Hurry, hurry, drive the fire truck (pretend to turn wheel)

Hurry, hurry, drive the fire truck

Hurry, hurry, drive the fire truck

Ding, ding, ding, ding, ding (ring bell)

Repeat…

Hurry, hurry, turn the corner (lean to one side)

Hurry, hurry, climb the ladder (pretend to climb)

Hurry, hurry, spray the water (pretend to use a hose)
