National Hugging Day

Today, January 21, is National Hugging Day . If you are like me, you might be surprised to find out that hugs have their own day. Now this doesn’t mean hugs are only good to give or receive one day a year. Did you know that hugging has both physiological and psychological benefits?

Actual Scientific Benefits of a Hug

Brain scientists have shown that touch, like a hug, can:
1. Lower blood pressure ,
2. Support the immune system (by stimulating the thymus gland),
3. Lower heart rate ,
4. Lower stress (lowers cortisol levels),
5. Improve sleep (that cortisol again!),
6. Stimulate the brain’s memory centers,
7. Reduce pain ,
8. Prompt positive emotions (release oxytocin, the “love hormone” ),
9. Reduce anxiety , and
10. Make you happier overall.

We have a lot of books about hugs at the Glen Ellyn Public Library. Check one out today and share a hug with your child.
