Costalegre by Courtney Maum

Costalegre takes place in 1930s Mexico, during World War II. A group of artists, all based on real-life Surrealists, have fled Europe and taken up residence in Costalegre on Mexico’s western coast. The story is told from the perspective of 15-year-old Lara, a fictionalized version of Peggy Guggenheim’s daughter. Lara’s tempestuous mother Leonora has gone to great efforts to protect her unique troupe of artists, but she has very little interest in the life of her daughter. Costalegre is a uniquely structured, lyrical coming-of-age story about art, love, and life during war.
