DIY Garden Storytime

Are you missing storytime at the library? I certainly am!

Below is a list of my favorite garden-themed books and songs for your family to share together. I’ve also included some activity ideas that pair with this garden theme. All you need is Hoopla , which is a one-stop shop for ebooks, music, and videos! Download it on your device through the iOS App Store or Google Play Store.

Now that the weather is getting warmer, I highly recommend enjoying these digital materials outside. It provides a natural opportunity for hands-on learning!

Planting a Rainbow by Lois Elhert

This title, featuring bold collage illustrations, explains the process of nurturing seeds to plants. It has excellent vocabulary words to help introduce readers to a variety of flora. As you’re reading, see if you have any of the flowers in your yard.

Bumblebee Buzz by Laurie Berkner

Pretend to be a bee and get extra points for making buzzing noises!

My Garden by Kevin Henkes

The illustrations in this book are stunning. Kevin Henkes perfectly captures the beauty of a garden. This particular garden features silly twists like chocolate rabbits and beach balls. It transitions nicely to a conversation about what types of things grow and what doesn’t.

It wouldn’t be a Miss Katy storytime without an opportunity for play! Go on a walk in your neighborhood and challenge your family to find flowers in each color of the rainbow. Older kids can be extra ambitious and look for flowers that have more complicated color names, like turquoise or blush.

Even though we can’t physically be together, keep checking our calendar and social media channels for virtual content!
