June is Pride Month

Pride Month is celebrated annually in June to honor the 1969 Stonewall Riots and the ongoing fight for justice and equality for the LGBTQ+ community. It is celebrated with parades, festivals, concerts, proms, and moreacross the United States and other countries. Chicago’s Pride festivals were recently shifted to October.

Pride Month is one of the Celebration of Culture events that appear on the library calendar to acknowledge holidays and other occasions that are valued in our community. Please check our calendar for programs that honor Pride Month. We also have Youth and Adult Pride book recommendations.

By including these days, we hope that you

  • see your diversity mirrored on our calendar
  • feel like we are taking your beliefs and observances into account with our programming
  • become aware of occasions valued by other members of the community
  • appreciate the diversity of our community

The library is committed to furthering our commitment to understanding and meeting the needs of our community.
