One hundred years from now, phones and laptops won’t exist. Instead, the Feed, a surgically-implanted device, will allow civilians across the world to communicate electronically with one another and access entertainment.
M.T. Anderson’s Feed shares the story of Titus, an American boy living through a harrowing time in the future as the Feed strips away social skills, proper language and writing, and eliminates the need for education. When Titus meets Violet, a rebellious teenager fighting the Feed, he quickly falls in love. After a near death experience on the Moon, Titus learns that Violet’s Feed is malfunctioning. Due to the Feed’s connection to the brain, Violet begins to deteriorate and die. During her last several months, Violet and Titus discover that the Feed isn’t a force for good, as everyone made it out to be. Written 20 years ago, Anderson’s Feed depicts a chillingly accurate future that seems to be closer than we realize.
To all dystopian fiction fans, you do not want to miss out on Feed! Anderson’s novel is the perfect mix of humor, teenage drama, and heartache. I highly recommend Feed as it is a fast paced and insightful look into the possible future. By the end of the book, you will be questioning and taking a closer look into the technological world we have created today. You might even put your phone away for a few hours.
