Makerspaces: Removing the Barrier of Potentially Cost-Preventative Equipment to Cultivate Digital Literacy

By: GEPL Staff

Libraries are reinventing themselves to include makerspaces that give communities access to equipment for hands-on experimentation and self-learning. Makerspaces remove the barrier of potentially cost-preventative equipment and software and give users the opportunity to cultivate their own digital literacy free of charge.

When planning for makerspace projects, include extra time and materials, because learning involves making mistakes. Trial and failure are valuable! Mess-ups, mistakes, and project turnouts that do not go quite as planned can be the best learning opportunities. In do-it-yourself learning spaces, mistakes are expected and key to problem-solving. 3D printing, laser cutting and engraving, embroidering, flat and mug heat pressing, and sublimation and large-format printing are great opportunities to try new things, whatever the outcome!

With exposure to new and interesting things in The Workshop, you might find a new passion or interest. Have an open mind and be ready to be amazed. There are a lot of fun things to learn about and try out!

In The Workshop, some project materials will be available for purchase. Users can also bring in their own supplies for select makerspace equipment if the supplies are deemed safe for use with the equipment.
