Summer is upon us. For many, this means more free time and fewer responsibilities. This means that we will have more time to entertain ourselves, often through the form of watching movies and shows. The library has many DVDs with movies and shows for people like you to take home and watch. I have compiled a list of five movies and one show that I have watched, and that I think are certainly worth your time this summer. These movies will have you thinking, and some of them will give you your daily dose of action. All these movies will have you on your toes, thinking about the film well after you watch, and some may even keep you up at night. Some of these movies may be considered classics, so my apologies if you have already watched them.
Inception (2010)
The first movie that is totally worth your time is Inception. This is an example of Christopher Nolan’s poetic plots for his masterful movies. This movie is a mind-bender that tests the boundaries of reality. It is a great movie, and it will keep you dwelling on it for a very long time. Some are angry at the fact that the movie leaves a giant loose end, but this only builds the hype for a sequel. Although this has been teased by Nolan himself, there is no concrete evidence that a second Inception will grace the world soon.
Tenet (2020)
This movie will play with your mind and like Inception, will keep you on your toes. This is yet another masterclass from one of the greatest directors of all time, Christopher Nolan. This movie will not only feature **Mild Spoiler Alert** time inversion but even mind inversion. The Protagonist, who has no name, lives life in a dystopian reality in which the movie is set. Tenet is proclaimed to be “mind-boggling” and “exhilarating”. It will most definitely keep you on the edge of your seat and will change your perception of time itself.
The Truman Show (1998)
Following the theme of mind-bending realities, The Truman Show will keep you up at night. Although it is not scary, it will have you questioning your reality, much like the protagonist of the story, Truman Burbank, who is played by Jim Carrey. In this film, the main character has doubts about his life that he can’t seem to shake. Throughout the story, he uncovers truths that change his reality, and his perception of reality indefinitely. This movie reminds us, in a haunting way, that not everything is as it seems.
The Sixth Sense (1999)
Following the theme of not everything is as it seems, the last movie is The Sixth Sense, with a jaw dropper at the end of the story. This movie, which is considered a classic, is one you probably have watched during your life. You also may have heard a famous quote from the movie, “I see ghosts.” This movie also shows us that not everything is as it seems. After watching the movie, you will see why the title is what it is. It is very hard to watch it again, because the realization at the end of the movie will have you continually connecting the dots from the moment the film starts.
Loki (2021-2023)
Last but not least, I chose the show Loki. This one, like Tenet, deals with time and its perception. However, this is a series, with two seasons that have six episodes each. Personally, I have only watched the first season, but I would be lying if I told you I wasn’t ecstatic to finally watch the second season this summer. This show deals with the beginning of time, the end of time, and everything in between. It portrays a place where time doesn’t exist, a void, so to speak. I can assure you that this show is most definitely worth watching. The first season of Loki is widely available, but because it is very recent, the second season cannot be found in DVD format, and it is only available to watch on the streaming service Disney+.
That sums up my list of the six best things to watch this summer that will keep you on your toes. I hope you enjoy your summer, and I hope you enjoy these titles.
