The library loves to encourage community writers! To help writers create, edit, format, and generate print-ready and eBook formats, Illinois libraries provide a free tool called Pressbooks .
Pressbooks is similar to Scrivener, Atticus, iA Writer, Squibler, and Ulysses. Unlike word-processing software like Microsoft Word and Google Docs, Pressbooks has themes and a cover generator, and organizes the metadata of your book.
• Once you create a profile in Pressbooks, you can import content or start from scratch.
• You can upload media files to add images and illustrations for cookbooks and memoirs.
• You control the size and orientation using a provided theme or custom CSS.
• Pressbooks does not supply International Standard Book Numbers (ISBNs). You can obtain these unique numeric commercial book identifiers from an affiliate of the International ISBN Agency if your bookstore requires them. Each format of your book—ebook and PDF— needs a different ISBN.
• If you need support, email inkie@railslibraries.org.
Even if you plan to do more than an ebook and are not planning to self-publish, this is a wonderful tool for authors.
