World Languages Collection

By: Meredith Bazzoli, Youth Librarian

The Youth Department has a growing World Languages collection. With over 20 languages represented, visitors will find items in many formats including picture books, board books, and graphic novels.

Do you speak a language other than English in your home? What stories would you like to see represented in the Glen Ellyn Public Library Youth World Languages collection? Please submit a Suggest a Purchase form or email reference@gepl.org with your suggestions.

Gratitude: English-Urdu by Patricia Billings
This bilingual board book explores how kids both feel and express gratitude. Simple text and illustrations will engage babies and toddlers while making an abstract concept more concrete.

Me Gusta by Angela Dominguez
Angela Dominguez weaves Spanish and English together to show how Latine families connect and share life together through moments of celebration and hardship. The illustrations beautifully show the community and familial relationships in the story and create great opportunities to elaborate on and discuss the concepts in the text.

Dziennik Cwaniaczka: Zapiski Grega Heffleya by Jeff Kinney
Greg Heffley tries to navigate the new social hierarchies of middle school with his best friend Rowley Jefferson. In this translation of a favorite story, Greg’s diary comes to life with humorous illustrations of his singular quest to be popular, no matter what he has to do to get there.

¡Tienes un pájaro en la cabeza! by Mo Willems
When carefree Piggie alerts Gerald to the presence of a bird on his head, the worrisome elephant must keep it together as one bird becomes two. Even worse, the birds start to build a nest right on Gerald’s head! This is one of several Elephant and Piggie books in Spanish in the World Languages collection.

Hal ta’lam kam ‘uhibak = Guess How Much I Love You by Sam McBratney
This sweet story is an Arabic translation of a modern classic and top bedtime story pick. Little Nutbrown Hare tries to explain to his dad, Big Nutbrown Hare, just how much he loves him. The back and forth between the two characters makes this a special story to share with little ones to foster connection.
