Carnegie Libraries hold a special place in American history and in the hearts of generations of Americans. Andrew Carnegie helped build 1,681 libraries across the United States, including the first true public library for Glen Ellyn on the northeast corner of Park and Crescent. The building opened in the fall of 1914 with accommodations for 5,000 books.
Carnegie Corporation of New York is honoring that legacy with $10,000 gifts to the roughly 1,280 Carnegie Libraries that still operate and acknowledge their link to Carnegie as part of America’s 250th anniversary. Approximately 750 Carnegie libraries continue to use their original buildings, while others (like Glen Ellyn Public Library) have moved to new locations.
